Starting Over Again

Hello fellow garderners,

My name is Norma. I am a teacher, wife, student of life, spritual seeker and a lover of gardens. We moved to Texas almost 7 years ago to a beautiful home on 2 1/5 acres from the suburbs of Chicago. Upon arriving I went crazy spending hours upon hours creating a beautiful gigantic garden in our back yard as well as the front. I then became sick with an illness which is said to be treatment resistant. It's been 2 years and I now am feeling almost to my normal self. Some days are better than others.

And then I find this site! Have been inspired, supported and mentored only in the last few weeks. An answer to prayer? I believe so. You see I live in the country which can be very isolating. I would look out the back and the garden had become a mess. Overwhelming and all I could think of of was what for? I now wake up and think "Do one more thing...and who can I share it with." I am excited and thank all of you for adding me as your friend.

Love what you have done to your yard. You have so many cute things in your gardens. You and your husband have really done a great job. I just wanted to share with you, I have been putting plastice bags inside my handing planters to contain the water. I haven't been able to find the water holders that I showed to you last year.Maybe China isn't making them anymore. When I empy our a large bag of potting soil that seems to be th best because, the plastic is really tough and will handle the sunlight. You might want to try this.

Yes Norma, this would be done at the beginning of the season or when replacing seasonal blooms like pansies to petunias etc... Put bowl in first and then sponges and then soil. I also through in a couple of pieces of broken clay pots near the bottom. They soak up moisture and then return it slowly. I' guess I'm to cheap to spend money on high-tech soils when less expensive alternatives exist!!! lol!

It's good that you have won your way back through gardening. It's the most thereputic thing I have ever found. I too have my disabilities to contend with. But i've found that gardening takes me away from woes and delivers me into my Eden.(So to speak! lol!) I have a trick that I have used sucsessfully for my hanging baskets, containers and fiber lined planters. I have bought up old bowls and saucers at garage and yard sales and place them in the bottoms of said containers.I then cut up cheap sponges from the dollar stores etc... and fill the bowls. (Be sure to rinse them thoroughly first) This seems to work at providing an inexpensive way to keep the moisture in. Continued blessings. David
