Well that sounds better than the plastic bags I used on mine. After 2 years of drying to quickly I took the whole coconut shell with the dirt and put it  inside a plastic bag and then set that in a new coconut shell. I dont have to water as…

Dodgeball Gardening Tip

The other day I was out finding plants to put in my 1/2 hanging wall baskets. It's not a whole basket if you know what I mean. I got to thinking how the coconut basket only lasts so long and how the water just runs out of it quickly. Being in TX, they tend to dry out quickly and need watering almost everyday. Well, I found a solution. Since I have 4 sons and they are now grown; I had some deflated dodge balls lying around the yard. I stumbled upon (literally). It got me thinking. Why not cut…See More

I LOVE this idea...how ingenious!!! Amazing.  I will definitely begin saving some rolls so I can do this next spring.  Darn it, I seeded about 30 trumpet plants and could have used paper rolls...would have saved $$!

Graduation Garden Party

Well my dream of having a party in my garden has come to pass. I have been working on my garden for 5 years now. Nothing fancy. I would say I have a cottage garden. Veggies growing amoung the flowers really was a conversation piece. The grapevine had beautiful clusters cascading thru the lattice really drew the eye up for some of the guest. I had Christmas lights on and the weather was awesome last night. I couldn't of asked for better. Plus, it had rained a couple of days prior and there were…See More

Yes, they are grapes. Have harvested two years in a row. Last year the squirrels beat us to them. The skin is bitter but we pinch them off and eat the flesh. Neighbors were disappointed they didn't get any this year.

Texas Heat

Gardening friends,

I am from San Antonio, TX. and the heat here is unbearable at times. However, I have managed after three years to make a small piece of paradise in my backyard. The photos here are not current. I started in 2007 to garden since my four boys are now pretty much grown.

My youngest and I love gardening and we call ourselves "hobbits" because they loved to garden.

I do a little of everything. Herbs, veggies (just last year), flowers, but my pride and joy is my grapevine. I hope to get photos up soon.

What used to be only sunshine in the backyard is now mostly shade. We also have banana trees which really give it a tropical feel.

Looking forward to making new gardening friends. pat

Toilet Paper Rolls

Posted on March 28, 2011 at 7:10am 2 Comments

Last weekend I went to a plant swap where everyone was thrilled to get one of my green bean seedlings that were already 5 inch high in a toilet paper roll. They thought the idea was great. Thought I'd pass it along. Don't throw out the paper rolls; use them to plant seeds in and then just dig a whole and plant the whole seedling in the ground; it's biodegradable.

I was excited to get lots of plants that day. My favorite find was the bengal cana lily. I love the foilage…

AVON's 2011 Flower Calendar

Posted on January 5, 2011 at 8:39am 0 Comments

I was so happy to get my 2011 Avon Calendar. It is entitled the Language of Flowers and the photography is superb!

You could cut the photographs out and frame them they are so beautiful.

If you are not into AVON, you might just take a look at their calendar. I think if you order you can get one. But do it FAST. I'm sure they are going to run out of these lovely calendars.

Please consult your local AVON consultant and if you don't have one try mine:

Make-shift greenhouse tip

Posted on January 3, 2011 at 1:16pm 6 Comments

Earlier I was putting christmas lights in my make-shift greenhouse. My 14 year old calls it my getto gazebo. Found 4 huge tree black pots and placed 2 archways adjacent from each other to form dome shaped arch. Covered it with plastic tarps and one of our old dome tents.  Then added the christmas lights around inside and throughout some of the plants. I think this is going to work especially with those old type of Christmas lights since they give off quite a bit of heat. I'll see with up coming… Continue

Thanks for your comment on the tomatoes! The good thing about Iowa is the rich black dirt where just about anything grows. I basically just plant veggies & they sprout like weeds. They do need quite a bit of water which I have to do if it doesn't rain.
