The A.D.D. Gardener

Posted on March 12, 2010 at 1:12pm 12 Comments

I have learned to manage my ADD in most areas of my life but I have to tell you this disorder really shows its ugly head when I step into the garden.

My morning in the garden went something like this: Slip into the boots, stuff hands in gloves. . .Remember I forgot the cell phone. Slip out of boots, take off one glove. Put phone in my pocket and look for the glove I just took off. Open the door. . . . close the door. I better get a sweater. Open door again and walk with purpose toward… Continue

STEP ONE - Make a Plan

Posted on March 6, 2010 at 11:41pm 2 Comments

Garden professionals will tell you to have a written plan for your gardens. My plan was written in my head. Not really a good place to keep it for the risk of losing your mind in the building process is high. Non-the less, in my mind the plan remained as I…

The creeping phlox is beautiful when blooming but pretty short lived. It forms a thick mat of almost prickly evergreen foliage which can turn brown if allowed to dry out. Mine seemed rather slow to get established but then took off.

I have had trouble with huge ant hills forming under this nice shelter. A patch of the phlox would be dying out and sure enough a colony of ants would have moved in.

It's pretty hardy, I walk on it as I make my way to other sections of the garden.

It doesn't really prevent weeds and grasses from sprouting and I am constantly cleaning out invaders.

So like everything it has it's pros and cons. For me the cons are worth the spring burst of color

Hi Pattie,
The hill is blooming with creeping phlox (phlox subulata). It comes in a variety of colors from white, pale pink, deep pink, lavender and purple red. It blooms in the spring and then is a deep green the remainder of the summer.
