The tree I have as the photo for my page I lost over a two year period, to the drought we had a couple of years ago. Although I'd like another tree, I have decided to plant a peony or two in its place. But I miss the tree; we had a canapied…

The only remedy I found is fencing the veggies the bunnies like; all the repellants that claim to be effective have not proven to be. The rabbits don't seem to like tomatoes, peppers, or beans as they have left them alone. But they love…

We are having a giant snowstorm here in western NC. In fact right now it is a mix of rain and snow. I can't wait 'til Spring arrives! Anyone started seeds indoors yet?

I believe that tomatoes do not like temperatures above 90 degrees, especially when it comes to setting fruit. (despite irrigation).

Haven't heard much from North Carolinians. How's everyone's harvest? We started picking peppers and tomatoes and beans. The broccoli was finished at least 3 weeks ago and by that time all the main heads were picked and the worms had…

I am growing three kinds of tomatoes and at least half of the 'Celebrity' type have yellow leaves but the tomatoes themselves are unaffected. The 'Better Boy' and 'Italia' are fine. But we have had a very wet week and…

Hi Betty, I was able to exchange an email with my sister who is vacationing in Bermuda and she thinks she knows who you are. Her daughter, my niece, used to work at a farm in Windham that also sold ice cream and she thinks you used to go there with…

Rabbits!

Posted on May 19, 2009 at 7:36pm 2 Comments

Rabbits invade our yard like they have found rabbit heaven. The only remedy I have found is to enclose my raised garden frames with rabbit fencing. Various repellants that claim to be 100% effective have not worked! The only vegetables they don't seem to eat are tomatoes and peppers. Anyone else had problems with rabbits? Ruth

Well, I don't really keep them off, I just keep them to a minimum. I tie pie plates to tomato stakes to sort of reduce the number of them. Starlings are the worst. It sounds kinda mean, but I use a BB gun to keep them out of my yard. I don't really shoot the birds, just close enough to them to make them think I am trying to shoot them. It doesn't take long for them to get the message. It also helps that I have 10 bushes. lol

Ruth, I previously mentioned about finding a garden book on "companion planting". I found it to be very helpful. It will tell you the importance of rotating your crops every year, what plants will repel the bad insects above such as marigolds and what companion vegetable plant wii repel insects below ground such as root maggots. That's where I found the rabbit repellent, onions. While you still may have some damage going organic, you are free of toxic pesticides which is unhealthy.

Ruth, Years back, I had trouble with rabbits eating my organic vegetable plants. Since I don't like to use chemicals, I read that surrounding your plants with onions is a natural repellent. I was growing vine type plants on a chain link fence and planted three varieties of onions in front of the vegetables.. Maybe it was coincidence but I had no more rabbit problems and I benefited with getting onions. Garlic is another natural repellent that I used around rose bushes to repel aphids. Find yourself a book on "companion planting". Hope this works for you. Dave
