Rachel replied to Scott A. Ellis's discussion Anyone growing pumpkins? in the group Vegetable Gardens
"I grow pumpkins every year. I pretty much just leave them alone and let them do whatever they want. I've had completely orange ones now since July. They will turn yellow all at once if they are going to rot, so I wouldn't worry about it. I…"

After reading an article in Mother Earth News I've been inspired to keep a spreadsheet on the costs and savings from having a vegetable garden this year. I have a scale that I will weigh my harvest with and then will check out local prices for organic produce to compare. I've already started my spreadsheet with costs so far.

First I'd like to say "Hi!" to everyone! I'm not new to Ning, but I am new to this site.

My fiance and I just bought a house in the SF Bay Area last December. We love gardening, and would eventually like to have a homestead, but we definitely need to work up to that. When we were looking to buy a house we only had two criteria. I am envious of the beautiful lavenders that decorate your whole area in Napa. Lavender grows in my area, but not as glorious as in Napa!

You can sure tell if you plant Sweet Potaotes in the light of the moon and not the dark. You will have all leaves above ground and nothing underneath the ground. Never planted them in the light again. I love to talk to old timers about farming, I have learned alot from them. My brother said how did you learn all this and make your stuff so big and healthy, I told him dad taught me and he said I must of missed that classs!!!!! lol

"Actually, I thought it was plastic until I observed it up close and actually touched it! It has very small stems and seems to spread from either runners or seeds---not sure, but it is definitely real."

"Not a pine tree, but related. It's some type of Cycad. Conifers (which a Pine is) belongs in the family of Gymnosperms. So do Cycads, Gingko and other cone bearing plants like Ephedra. Cycads are ancient. Precursors to Conifers.  "
