The Prey of the Praying Mantis

Posted on October 4, 2011 at 12:44pm 7 Comments

This summer has been one where I've enjoyed the numbers of Monarch Butterflies that have been flying through and being born in my garden. I thought I've finally got that Monarch habitat that I've always wanted. I saw my first Praying Mantis kill in late July a Monarch Butterfly. Later I saw Tiger Swallowtails, Red Admirals, plus Skippers, and even caught them eating a Japanese Beetle. Today I saw what I thought was a Myth, but I have the pictures to prove it. I don't think I will have any… Continue

Aledo Rhubarb Fest

Posted on June 1, 2011 at 3:37pm 2 Comments

I live 30 miles south of Aledo, Il. and have a desire for some of the best Rhubarb pie that you'll ever have. But I'm going to start out with the Fireman's breakfast on Saturday morning. There pancakes are great and a Strawberry Rhubarb or Blueberry Rhubarb sauce only makes them better. They have a craft market in the village square where we have ended up buy plants as well as other Rhubarb Treats. If any one is close to Aledo I recommend it for small town fun. They said on there web site that… Continue

Getting ready for a winter nap!

Today as I was looking out the window that over looks one of my Walnut Trees, I spotted a squirrel gathering something off the ground. I thought at first it was nuts but was surprised to see him with a mouth full of dry leaves. I watched as he climbed the telephone pole and watched as he paused to leap into the tree. He scampered up the tree and deposited his horde of leaves in a hole that he had found at the top just out of my view. After several trips his activity stopped, thinking his home… Continue

Living in the trees

Posted on July 3, 2010 at 4:00pm 1 Comment

I live on the side of a hill in the shade of two huge walnut trees. This morning as I was having my coffee listening to the news and enjoying the peacefulness of the morning. A screaming and chattering loud enough to wake the dead came through the windows. I looked out the window to see starlings attacking a squirrel. I forgot about everything I was doing and set in wonderment at activitey that I was watching. Evidently the squirrel was looking for some breakfast. He managed to chase off the… Continue

I like all the Hostas you mentioned, I especially like the Blue Angel. I have a new found love for these plants because I discovered they do so well in my yard, it stays somewhat wet and I have a lot of shady spots. I am trying to find a few that like some sun too, I have a couple empty sunny areas. I read somewhere that yellow or yellow margined varieties do better with sun, so maybe Yellow River would do nicely in these areas of my yard. Thanks for all your input, I sure appreciate it!

Your welcome Randy....I am realizing there are so many Hostas, wow it is hard to tell some of them apart! I got my supposed Sum & Substance from a local greenhouse... will have to order one from somewhere, maybe they will get it right! LOL I just want a large impressive one for the front of my house. Maybe an Empress Wu also (-=
