Rhonda Fleming Hayes replied to Kathy Hayes's discussion 'Fennel.' in the group Herbs
It's Florence fennel that creates the bulb. Foeniculum vulgar or common fennel is used for foliage and seeds. It's a great plant. ---Rhonda Hayes (no relation!)

Ivan: You might want to take advantage of re-seeding or spreading herbs you can divide, at first to build up your plant stock. Lavender is very particular about drainage and also needs lots of air circulation. Just a few thoughts..

I am more in favor of leave it where it is, or at least somewhere in the garden.  I am experimenting this year with using leaves fallen from my dogwood, which has anthracnos.  Usually I put them in the yard waste bin, however I believe…

Tidy Up or Let It Be: Where Do You Fall on Fall Garden Cleanup?

No matter where you fall on the issue of fall garden cleanup, you have to appreciate a recent tweet by Benjamin Vogt. He's a poet, gardener and author of Sleep, Creep, Leap, which recounts his adventures in prairie gardening."Just prepped my garden for winter by glancing out the office window and sighing. Seriously, why do people do fall clean-up? Nature doesn't."I guess I fall somewhere close to this 140-characters or less, garden-maintenance manifesto. I don't do much. But I do a little.I…See More

Marigolds for "El Dia de los Muertos"

An offering for the Day of the Dead or El Dia de los Muertos. Sometimes known as All Saints or All Souls Day. Marigolds are associated with this day of remembrance. Thinking of all the gardeners in my family that are gone but not forgotten. I tend my gardens with them close in my heart.See More

I was looking at your friends list, I think you need some one from Alaska, so will you be my friend? You have people from all over. I enjoy seeing were people live and love gardening.

It truly is! I lived in CA for a while during college. Have a pack of relatives there as well. I couldn't afford to retire there but wish I could have.
Yes - MN has a wonderful, short summer and a forever, cold winter. I used to say "Fourth of July, State Fair then it snows!".

Hi Rhonda - saw from your page that you are from Wayzata. I grew up in MN and graduated from Minnetonka. I was a cop in Brooklyn Center until I retired in 2003 and moved to NW Florida.
I enjoy both the Homosassa and Crystal River areas as well as over closer to Tallahassee the Wakulla Springs area (well worth seeing!). I agree - old Florida is very interesting. Had to catch the mermaids at Weeki Watchee too!

LOL! Rhonda, what about the plants that sneak in from nowhere. I don't know if they're weeds but I know I didn't plant them. Some even turn out to look pretty nice, so I just leave them there.

Hi Rhonda! Plant tags are one of those great ideas that I never get around to until I realize it would have been a great idea to tag my plants! Nature plays dirty little tricks like the weeds that look like garden phlox, or shasta daisies. I've even had weeds that look like hosta leaves. Tagging would have surely kept me from snatching out the wrong plants!

Thanks Rhonda,
I'm actually going to put very light plastic over my dwarf peach trees this spring if I have to. I think the frost nipped them as well.
