Swiss Chard

Posted on June 7, 2009 at 2:00am 3 Comments

I have a beautiful batch of swiss chard this year. I have surrounded it with chicken wire so the bunnies aren't eating it. I thought some of you might be interested in my mom's recipe for cooking it. It is an old sicillian recipe. If anyone else has some swiss chard recipes that they would like to share, I would love to have them. I'm sorry my recipe doesn't really have quantities.

Saute onion and garlic in olive oil

add 5 or 6 chopped roma tomatoes (or a can of diced or some… Continue

My annual experiment

Every year I like to plant one or two things that I have never planted before. This year I planted white potatoes in a fabric potato bin. I purchased it from "Gardners Supply Catalog. I have the potato bin sitting on top of 4 paver stones so they will drain properly and am following the directions that came with them to grow the potatoes. I am amazed at how quickly the potatoes sprouted and are coming along beautifully. Has anyone ever tried these bins? They are supposed to yield 13 lbs of… Continue

I've never done a blog before, but here goes.

I came from the land of wonderful growing soil, south Jersey. You could plant anything without enhancing the soil and it would grow. I should know, I grew up on a 300 acre truck farm. For those of you that don't know what a truck farm is, it is a vegetable/fruit farm where you "truck" your produce to the market to sell. My dad and his two brothers were partners in the endeavor that raised and educated a… Continue

Hi---glad you joined the rest of us who came from other places. we are all still "learning" about Tn. gardening. I came from central NYS---and never had 'great" soil there, either---but where I am now---it is ridiculous. I've had to ask my hubby to dig a hole for some of my additions, since the ground was just oo hard for me to do. That is not my idea of "enjoying" gardening:-) I like to just do it myself.

I ,too, put in 2 raised beds---and there I can plant by myself and grow things easier.

Glad you joined us here in Tn.

Sharon---give some thought to joining the Tn. gardeners. We're just a few so far, but growing.
