"Another thing that will go after your chickens, is an owl.  Up here we've had instances of an owl entering the coop when the chickens were sleeping at night, sidle right up to a chicken and grab it, then leave the coop while the rest of…"

Perris Island Cos (Romaine)

I've decided to try my hand at Romaine lettice, but I'm having difficulty finding care information about this particular type.  Some say to tie different types it up, but I can't find where this one should be tied.  I know in order to get them to grow in that nice shape they should be tied, but how do you tie them, and with what?Mine are a nice size, and I'm trying to figure out how big they should be before cutting them off and pretending I'm a rabbit.Any suggestions would help.See More

Sharon Robinson (Z4, ND, USA) commented on Donald Dunn's group Creatures In My Garden
"Minako - relocating Alligators doesn't always work, they sometimes come back, and if you have small children around, you don't want them as they don't distinguish between non-human food, and human-food.  I don't blame them,…"

"Garden Gal, it must have been a tiny hummingbird if a mantis was able to kill it.  Either that, or a really big mantis!  But it does sound like a Mantis, they have no fear."

"Oh yeah, they are cannabils, and will eat each other at every opportunity, even the adults do so.  Being a male mantis is definitely a drag."

"Yep, it's almost like they are saying...what? you're afraid of me as big as you are?  It always amazes me they will run like crazy, but once you catch them, they just sit there and look at you, as if daring you to try and hurt…"

"To Elizabeth Knight - That one on your ball is pretty good size, my bet is, that it's a female, they are the larger of the two, and generaly the braver as well.  If it is a female, she may lay eggs in your garden, you'll have to watch…"

Sharon Robinson (Z4, ND, USA) commented on Donald Dunn's group Creatures In My Garden
"To those who have mantis in your garden, you are so lucky, I wish we could have them here, but it's too cold in the winter.  When I lived in CA, we had them in the garden and flowers and they are wonderful creatures. One year, we had this…"
