oh yeah, Harry, we get lots of heat here. This past july had like 29 days over 100 degrees!   Sounds like that will be quite a job to build that bridge!

Ali, your artistry definitely shows.  I can believe it took you that long, too.I need to build a bridge across a seasonal stream...the caveat is that it has to be able to support a small garden tractor...that means either a lot of concrete and…

Annie, I'm glad you get enough sunshine to heat your tub.  It couldn't happen here in the PNW, too temperate, too cool.

Harry, the bath area has a cold water hydrant by the door and I have a short piece of hose I hook to it to fill up the tub.  In the summer if I fill it up early in the day the water is perfect by evening.  If it's not a hot day I…

Thanks Harry, Actually it took me nearly a year to complete. Each rail is red cedar that I scavenged from the woods near my house and hand finished to fit in an "artistic" pattern. Random, but not random, if you know what I mean.

Annie, does it really have 'hot' water piped to it?

Ali, I love that footbridge! Looks like it took a long time to conceive the railings.

Yard Sale Treasures

Posted on April 24, 2010 at 9:09pm 2 Comments

Just hit some awesome yard sales today. Found some cool containers and baskets to use for hypertufa molds, an antique table for my deck and also some great garden tools at an estate sale. For $3.00 I found a pair of heavy brass swans that have hollow bodies (for planting) they will look great in the garden when they get their natural patina coloring.

new potting shed plans

Posted on April 22, 2010 at 9:16pm 0 Comments

Trying to design a new shed with the hubby. I think we are going to build a board and batten shed, 12x16 with a 5' overhanging roof on one of the long sides, under which I will have a potting shed area 5x16 with a workbench and shelf over. I want to wall in the long exterior wall of potting shed area with lattice and 1/2 of the end walls as well to hide the bench and shelf, leaving a 3ft wide doorway at the entry end open and at the other end just the top 1/2 open so my work bench can wrap… Continue

Hypertufa Planters & other concrete projects

Posted on April 9, 2010 at 7:34pm 2 Comments

I recently attended a gardeners show where I attended a seminar on making concrete fossil stones and hypertufa containers. hypertufa is a mix of quickcrete, sand, vermiculite and peat moss. It makes a concrete that looks worn and aged. Does anyone have any good ideas for interesting form materials? I did see the use of wicker baskets which looked kind of cool.

Hi Stacy - My clematis is blooming now - big purple blossoms - even though I had to cut a lot of it off. I've had it so long, I don't remember where I got it - before Home Depot and Lowe's came to Oneonta! Do I pass you on the way to Albany?

I love nasturtiums! Your picture, did you take that this year? I bought some from a nursery, I stated some from seed indoors, and I threw some seeds into the ground and wouldn't you know the plants that are flourishing are the ones that were started from seed outdoors! Lesson learned.
