Well I started pea/beans inside and will plant this this weekend.
I had tomato and cuke starts on the back porch, sitting on the dryer (they LOVED that! Humid and warm)
However, I suspect my hubby threw something on top of them (the downside of…
Pulled this up and reallized I made a comment over a year ago so thought I'd report on progress from my planting times last year. Of course we had one of the best years on record as far as heat goes! But is there a "normal" year…
We have our rows all ready to plant now! Hopefully planting most of the direct sow stuff tomorrow. Tomatoes will go in when it's guaranteed not to drop into the 30's at night. Cleaned out the greenhouse from all the winter storage stuff,…
We used to live in the Seattle area for 20 years. I struggled with gardening the whole time I lived there. What the slugs & snails didn't get, the mildew did. Warm weather plants suffered greatly. It just doesn't get that warm &…
I have put some out already. My potatoes are coming up, so is my spinach, carrots, garlic, lettuce and swiss chard. I planted my walla walla onions yesterday. Still wayyy to cold for beans, tomatoes, cucumbers etc. Night time temps are still in the…
I had started my seeds way back February (I live in Seatac, WA) as I do wintersowing every year, much better for me as I dont have to worry about hardening and damping off. When my seeds germinate, then I move it to my small greenhouse and take the…
Where on the coast are you Karen? I'm just west of Port Angeles on the Olympic Peninsula. It is so frustrating planning to plant or weed or till and the heavens open and the rain falls. Or those days where the sun teases you all day, shining…
We had a teaser here in Spokane but we started somethings under lights in doors. My hubby loves the vegie Garden, he even has his tomatoes going under lights now. Good thing we did not put in the garden as we had SNOW just Saturday! I also have new…
I never have good luck with cucumbers and I love them. Tomatoes weren't doing so well the last 2 years in thew ground so I bought one of those hanging tomato things hope it works
I enjoy growing anything that works in my area which is the Pacific Northwest, specifically Vancouver, WA Zone 8. Veggies include corn, beans, tomatoes, peppers, onion, lettuce, etc. and last year I planted artichoke which got huge but takes two seasons to bare fruit so anxious to see what comes this year. I enjoy starting my seeds early and we just finished a "greenhouse" and I am trying to layout plans for my yard which has never really been landscaped even though built in 1972. This is my 3rd summer and I really like finding plants that are different from the "norm" like marigolds, petunias, etc. but don't get me wrong, I enjoy the norm too and my marigolds last year were the biggest I have ever seen, but for instance today we found a California Lilac and I have never seen this before. I pray I do not kill it as it was pretty expensive but I normally do not spend much and buy seed to try or plants marked down at the local garden centers. I am trying to plant with bulbs, perrenials and ground covers so things grow larger and multiple in my 10,000 sq ft lot that previously only had 4 rosebushes and some strawberry plants. Needless to say, I have a lot to do and I am going by trial and error without spending a lot of money. I love to work outside and I love the rewards that gardening brings as well the science, design and exercise that you also get. Great fun and wishing the sunny days would outnumber the rainy windy ones here in the Northwest!
How much time do you spend a week on average in your garden when weather permits?
During the spring and summer it can be a lot! I would say sometimes 25 a week if I work all weekend and watering/putting during the week. If I did not have to go to my job, it would be hard to get me out of the yard during the summer. During the winter, the rain does not allow for much work in the yard but our new greenhouse will help overcome some of the winter blues and let me keep growing and planning for the next summer so I am happy about that.
Hi Stacy, Thanks for you message and the columbine discussion. Mine came out of a seed package, but I like the flowers quite a bit. I just learned from a neighbor that if I had been deadheading them, they'd still be in bloom. Something to test out next season!
Hi Stacy, nice to meet you! The plant with the pink flowers is called Lewisia. You are not far from me! Sometime we'll have to get together and I'll give you some starts of my Lewisia. I'm in a Portland plant swap group that I went to last fall, got some awesome plants from it. It was held in NE Portland up near Sandy Blvd. When it comes up again I'll have to let you know.
