Wow, what a harvest! I've just planted my first Brandywine in my fall garden. Hope it does well!

I tend to let some of my herbs bloom as well for the same reason, and just cause the flowers are pretty!

Hi, Sue...what a great photo. I will have to try planting this. I'm going to see if I can grow now in my fall garden. I imagine I can here in Florida...kinda like growing collards I would think?

You've got good eyes. The tomatoes include Purple Cherokee, Brandywine, Black Krim, Supersteak and my volunteer grape & cherry tomatoes that come back from self-seeding every year. Yummy!

Sue Anderson replied to Linda Sant's discussion 'Rosemary' in the group Herbs
I live in southwest Iowa (zone 5/subzone 4A) and can't overwinter rosemary outside as it is a perennial plant in zones 8 & up. I treat it as an annual and replant every spring. I've had good luck ordering herb plants online from a…

Thanks for your comment on the tomatoes! The good thing about Iowa is the rich black dirt where just about anything grows. I basically just plant veggies & they sprout like weeds. They do need quite a bit of water which I have to do if it…

I only dream of having that many tomatoes. I am just not a great veggie grower but I'm trying.

YES!!!! I'd LOVE THAT!!!!!=)=) Thank you so much Sue!!!!!

Help me with composting. I'm understanding the concept of what ingredients to put in it, but I'm kinda iffy on the size of container needed. I'm also trying to do all this with as little money spent as possible....also heirloom seeds. I'm going to get those since we'll be eating what I grow...

I'm planning on a (or maybe 4) square foot garden with veggies, herbs, nuts and fruit. I'm still looking into how feasible all that is, but any input would be great!

A little gardening friend was visiting my flowers

Posted on August 29, 2009 at 1:51pm 0 Comments

I was tending my flower beds when I spied some movement on a batch of Black Eyed Susan blooms. A small praying mantis was looking for lunch among the flowers! It saw me at the same time and really gave me the stare down. It was a brave little insect that held it's ground and didn't move away from someone much larger that itself.

The praying mantis was introduced in the southeastern US in the late 1800's for pest control. They are… Continue

Why I Love to Be in the Garden!

Posted on August 28, 2009 at 9:25am 4 Comments

I may never have learned to love to garden if not for the influence of my grandparents. They spent all their waking hours outside, only going indoors for meals. My grandfather was a plasterer/cement mason by trade and had always worked in construction. He built their home in addition to others for his family members. He was also an avid rockhound and created jewelry from his finds in the desert. My grandmother was a homemaker all her life and a darn good one too. Together they were an inspiring… Continue
