"Your soil  will be very airy and light this year, add compost, as soon as this crop is finished, that's the ticket.  Start also tossing in coffee grinds, right now,  The earth worms will show up when the compost (you…"

"Craig,  Are they in the shade?  I don't know if this matters, but I have some daylily plants that are now in the shade most of the day and they have not yet bloomed.  I think I will move them to sunnier spot in the yard."

"Charlie, your pests are either slugs or rolly pollys which both bite away at the soft fruits.  My bet is that it is slugs, and a tray of cheap beer will bait them.  Just set it nearby the bed.  My husband formed a cage covering for…"

Run-around Su

Well, the title sums my history up. I have moved through 16 states and 2 countries in my lifetime, thus far.
I have Gardened in 5 different Hardiness zones. So far, in my experience, the bay area of Northern California was the best place for gardening, just about anything, grows there!
Now, returned to get myself dirty in good old hot and humid, zone 8 B, and mostly container gardening at present, though I planted a raised bed vegetable garden, which I am tending at my mom-in-laws. It is doing nicely, so far!

Hollyhock Rust

Posted on May 25, 2011 at 9:00pm 2 Comments

My hollyhocks which were planted in October 2010, survived through winter only to be devistated this spring by hollyhock rust.  One lone hollyhock made it to full height rewarding us with it's white layered petticote of blooms.  I just cut out all the infested greenery and will look into fungicides.  I am trying to do the Organic thing, and hope there is something I can do that is safe to us all, people and plants.
