Koi Lovers

I just started a facebook group devoted to Koi where we can discuss problems and share pictures with other koi lovers.   I come here for my pond fix, but I want to see others share their koi and possible problems they may be having with them.http://www.facebook.com/groups/294347227308818/See More

Total shade from Oaks and grass don't mix

Posted on February 22, 2010 at 5:30pm 6 Comments

I consider myself fairly well trained in matters of landscaping, but I am in quite a bit of a conundrum with my own front yard. I live on a three acre plot with oak trees owning most of the property. The shade is pretty solid. They suck the moisture out of the soil and nothing likes to grow around them without a ton of help. My problem is finding something to plant in place of a lawn. I want that green in my yard and around my pond. Getting grass to take hold in this much shade is difficult. I… Continue

Come on Bloggers

Posted on February 14, 2010 at 10:42am 0 Comments

Come on folks. Blog your winter habits and plans for Spring and Summer (when and if the ever get here). My main plan is to try to get grass or something going in my shady yard. I'm a green freak. I want green, lots of it. I can easily add splashes of color, but I want that green around my pond and in my flower beds...

Greenhouse

Posted on February 9, 2010 at 11:22pm 0 Comments

When I built my greenhouse several years ago (15' x 20'), my wife said I was crazy for building it so big. Now I have it so full that I wish I had double the space. I have grown, divided, and grown again many varieties of plants that I used to buy new every year. I know that with my heating bill, I'm probably not even close to breaking even, but the thrill of growing my own plants is very satisfying. I went from 1 fern to 12, 1 Banana tree to 8, two small ficus to two huge ones.... Because I… Continue

I see you were checking out my dogs. They are Great Pyrenees and do look alot like Newfoundlands. They are the kindest dogs you could ever have and if they could they would be a lap dog LOL they have tried many times when I am sitting in a easy chair to get totally on my lap but I only let them lay across with front legs and body.

Hello Walt, We're really itchin' to get past this cold here in Charlotte, NC. My new vegetable garden is cut and I'm tilling the compost when the snow and frost lets me. I've started my herb garden indoors (see my blog Green Thumb Brown Thumb) and am waiting just a couple more weeks to start my seedlings. If you have a lot of shade, and I assume being in Arkansas you get ample moisture, I have success with leather ferns, iron plants, Japanese painter fern, ajuga, and pachysandra. I don't know how evenly textured you want your "green" area to be but mondo grass is very neutral and comes in a variety of shades.

That happened to me Dec07. Tree crashed onto the greenhouse and wiped out the power lines to the house. I used large scented candles and a tarp to hold in heat till power came back on. Bought a Harbor Freight greenhouse after that. It holds twice as much but is not as sturdy.
