American Elderberry

"Nice! Elderberries are good for Bronchial ailments, Fever and fighting the flu. Mildly poisonous though if eaten raw."

"Yeah, that bug just came out of its shell and I had to take a pic. Thought it was cool since I've found their shells all the time as a kid. Just the first time Ive ever seen one come out like that."

How much time do you spend a week on average in your garden when weather permits?
As much as I can...

Hello

I like to plant anything that will grow. Having my hands in the soil is the best stress reliever that I know of. And knowing that I can reap the harvest of my hard is work is the most reward thing ever. It brings me great joy to actually be able to see he benefits of hard work.
I live on approx. an acre with a lots of shade. Its hard to even get grass to grow. But we are trying to make it look great. My husband and I just started this years garden (2009) in the only sunny spot that we have. So Ive created flower beds around the house to utilize as much sun as we can.
I have a 9 year old son that likes being able to walk out in the yard and pick fresh broccoli, blueberries, strawberries, or peas and just eat them without having any pesticides. We also like having fresh herbs to use for cooking. Need an onion, basil, or oregano? We just go get it out of the garden.
I am looking forward to meeting new people and sharing our experiences. Looking for people interested in wild edibles. Would be interested in starting group.

I would also approach the classroom teacher to get their support. There are grants and other funding sources for school gardens so that actually is the least of your worries.

I started a group here for school gardens. Please come join us if you feel that is a group that would interest you.

Good luck getting this project off the ground!

Please include the blue berry cobbler recipe. I don't think I will get enough for a cobbler this year, between the chipmunks and my grandchildren, there aren't enough for cereal this year. Thanks.

I don't know where you are located, but my favorite wild edibles are blue berries and black berries. Black Berries just sprang to life in my beds. I have been eating them both.
