squirrel control help

I've been having a dickens of a time trying to keep the squirrels out of my planters!! My seedlings are/were coming up until the little creatures decided to play and dig most of them up!! I planted marigolds all around the borders and now i'm just waiting.Has any one had problems and a safe way to keep them at bay?
