Actually, Betty, that's the puff ball mushroom. Every time it 'smokes' it is releasing millions of spores for future puff balls!

Betty, why do you dig them up? Do you have pets that might eat them? I try not to dig them up, as they enrich the soil.

I have also a purple morning glory that keeps coming back in the Spring season and blooms through Fall season.. They're pretty and less maintenance though..
