About me and whats going on!

My name is Dawn and i just stared gardening this year! ive had herbs and flowers...well helped with for a few years now. Im still learning how to use alot of the herbs I have! I moved back home with my mom and dad about a year ago with my 2 yr old son. He LOVES to help mommy and mama plant flowers! When he was little i wanted to have a garden and make my own baby food, but i didnt have that option. So now i will have a garden and hopefully my son will eat what comes from it!

I also helped my mom install her pond and find plants that would look good in and around it. I hope she doesnt mind my opinion! LOL...we have a coi 3 goldfish a shabumpkin...and a fancy tailed spotted goldfish...thats what i call it any way. A few years ago we had a 3 legged frog...and we think it came back for a second year and we havent seen it since. last year we had another frog...actually i think a couple frogs. And this year we have seen SOMETHING jumping in as we walk out the door, and we think that is a frog! its funny they run from us...when the 3 legged frog was there, you could practically touch it b4 it would swim to the bottom! Also theres LOTS of plants in our pond. Some lilies a cattail and something else im not sure what it is, my mom could tell you!

I made some topsy turvy type planters out of 5 gallon buckets and im watching these plants closely to see how they progress. Im hoping they do good and maybe ill have more next year! They are pretty easy to make and CHEAP! My dad saves EVERYTHING so he has a TON of 5 gallon buckets in the garage...SOME PLACE!

We are starting a rock garden around one of the trees. So far all we have are the rocks. A local farmer offered his LARGE and i mean HUGE rock pile to us to take what we want! Now we need some dirt to fill it in a little bit so we have places to plant suckulants (im a horrible speller!) that like a lot of shade! We have a small rock garden around the pond but it only has one plant and its VERY SMALL!

Ive noticed lately as well that there are LOTS of people planting gardens this year. I thought that was a thing of the past, but alot of my friends have gardens. We all have different things and plan to share from each others gardens! HOW COOL! Im so excited for this year and my garden, I jus wish it would hurry up and GROW!!!! Im very impatient! Im also excited for next years garden...I already know what i want to plant...I keep telling mom I want a mexican garden! lol. I want to plant a few kinds of peppers and tomatoes onions corn...and the other day when i was at the garden place we have around here i saw okra! i want okra! and i dont know why...i just do!

Well i Think thats ALOT about me and whats goin on! ill keep a blog about my garden and update pics for everyone to see!

Thanx for being My Friend and if your not PLEASE add me!

Posted on May 29, 2009 at 9:01am 2 Comments

HA im going to grow an avocado tree! I was joking with my mom about putting the seed in my compost and maybe it too would grow! haha...and she said she had a friend that grew one...so she looked it up for me and now im in the process! says to grow more than one to have fruit...so maybe ill have 2. They grow to like 20 feet tall...but can be pruned to be MUCH smaller. Seems how we live in OHIO I cant have one full time outside, so it will have to come in during the winter. I will take up to 3 or… Continue

How exciting to be starting your first garden. I learned from my dad when we lived in Connecticut. That translates as 3 inches of soil above bedrock. That's why they have all those stone fences. When my kids were little they started gardening. My son's severe asthma short circuited his gardening, but my daughter and I have spent many hours in the dirt. She's now in Portland Oregon in her first home and starting her garden. The memories we have still make us laugh. When she was 4 I had to rent a public plot to grow veggies. One day we went to our garden after a rain. The garden badly needed weeding. Due to the clay soil the rain had made a large mud plot. We had to walk a long way to the garden. We went barefoot. By the time we got to our garden plot we had "mud moccasins" on our feet. My daughter couldn't stop laughing and dancing in her "mud mocs". It was one of the most wonderful afternoons. So 26 years later as she's planning her garden she calls me and says remember when.... I hope you and your son make wonderful memories too! I'll be anxious to read your updates! Enjoy the garden!

However my flower beds are doing wonderful this year. Where Ilive almost all the ground is clay and there has been many blood, sweat and tears to get the flower beds up and growing. They are really coming together very nicely this year.....so much growth!!!!

Keep your pictures coming!

Your pictures of your garden look great and what a fantastic idea of hanging those buckets instead of buying them from t.v.! My neighbor bought those yet the buckets are just as effective and will probably last much longer. Your plants are doing so much better than mine. This year I'm having a real hard time keeping mine alive. I have moles but I always had mole so I'm not sure what it is...

Ladybugs and lacewing larvae go after the moth eggs that produce these pests as do trichogamma wasps.

Best deterrent is to hand pick them from the plants in a daily inspection.

They are discouraged by garlic/pepper tea sprayed on the stems and leaves of my plants--then later on the fruits. I don't spray blossoms though. Bt sprays will kill them. These sprays are a last resort for me because they also drive off the beneficial insects that are the most help.

Mulching is practically a religion down here. If you don't mulch you might as well not plant because you can't possibly water enough with our heat!

You don't have to buy mulch. Partially completed compost makes great mulch too. I've been known to drive down alleys looking for discarded yard waste for my mulch LOL!

MAYBE I can help you and maybe you can advise me....

Great to talk with you.
