Chirstmas Cactus in February

The greenhouse is performing wonderfully. The temp has gone down to 15 degrees inside the greenhouse even with the heater for weeks in a row and what survived?: The Christmas Cactus, chamomile (all varieties), viola, calendula, castor bean, oregano, lettuce, basil, leeks, onion, parsley, cilantro, salvia (barely), pothos (rotted and turned mushy but there is green at the base of the stems), geranium(red leaved now due to frostbite but still growing) the roses are still green leaved, lemon balm,…See More

Thanks so much for your message. I am looking forward to using my greenhouse this Feb. to start seeds for my 3 raised gardens. Thanks again.

It is snowing ever so lightly here...supposed to be flurries but where I live it may be two inches when everyone else gets a dusting. We are expecting heavy snow on Friday and I am looking forward to it.....it makes everything look so clean and fresh and the quiet that comes with it is deafening. This morning has that type of quiet...again...I am blessed and will be able to get some writing done after I wake-up a bit.

I hesitate to put heaters in the greenhouse due to the proximity of the greenhouse to the house and of course the fact that the heaters will cost more money than I have to run. Finances are tight here as with everyone. That is why I was so interested int he candle idea. I have a bunch of those and I have small ones that I know will burn out in a short time like four hours so I wont sleep with them burning. The other thought I had was to put out a camp stove that has a big pot of water on it. That wold burn out eventually and the hot water would steam up the place and make it humid and the plants would love that. With the small propane cans it should work quite nicely overnight during a -5 below zzzzzero event like we had for four days two weeks ago. It was so cold no one could breath when going outside unless we had scarves over our face.

Today is a watering day and will be a bit difficult since it is snowing and there is no water spicket in the greenhouse. I will have to run a hose from the sink through the living room window to fill buckets out there and then go around the house to water. It is difficult and not the plan I had in mind when we built it but I have to rely on others to get most of the work done due to my lack of strength. Gone are the days of me doing everything due to the disability but I am grateful that I can do what I can. At least I am not having to use my wheels as much as I did the first year and although I have pain I can do a lot compared to that first year....I am so grateful, watching TV was so boring and reading wasn't an option. At least I am able to keep my independance and not having to live with my aged mother who couldn't take care of me even if she wanted to. I am truely blessed.

I've had one candle burning for about 3-4days now. I can see the glow from in the house. This just adds a couple of degrees when needed. This time I had to rip out the side to even put the candles in. Should be around 20 the next few days; my electric heaters seem to give me a 25deg gain by themselves.

Sounds like you're living the great life. My wife is in a wheelchair and I am slowing down greatly, can't lift much but I have just about every lifting and moving device there is; I seem to have an affinity to moving rocks. I built wheelchair paths to every sector of my gardens, part of a 2 year projects. Sempervivums, and several other varieties are look alikes, with the hen and chicks. I am becoming fascinated with the caudex plants, having a large base, not necessarily looking like cactus. I have about 500 non hardy plants in my greenhouse, hardys are in beds. All my beds are user friendly, they would make great presentation beds for you. Check out the designs. We'll keep in touch.

Hi Freddy,
I love succulents but due to the climate here we have little of those. I would love to start a water feature here on the farm.Last fall I cleared an area below the deck in the back in preparation for a water pond but we have been unable to dig it yet. Perhaps next spring. So far, we have built a small greenhouse adjacent to the south side of the house and the plants are barely surviving in there due to the cold at night..we may have to add heat and not just an open window in the Living room...LOL. We also have a large veggie garden during the summer and we sell our perennials and heirloom tomatoes when people stop by. We have chickens for eggs and raise turkeys during the summer for fall harvest and a gluten free thanksgiving. We have raised a new zucchini this year...a vine zucchini that looks like a pumpkin in shape, a zucchini in color and is picked when it is the size of a baseball for the best taste. It did really well up here this season w hen most other peoples lost their whole crop due to squash bugs and slugs...we had so much rain this year in New England all the big farm tomatoes died as well. Ours were heirloom so ours didn't die.

What have you grown recently that is your favorite?
