Crazy2day replied to jamie's discussion squash bugs in the group BUGS-The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
"My extremely free range chickens helped out.  But you gotta get them when they are little.  The adults shells are so hard you can't even squish them.  The chickens couldn't even crack them...ewww.  Hate squash bugs!!"

Rich Bishop replied to jamie's discussion wind resistent in the group Perennials
"Grasses are a natural for windy areas. Tall, medium and short species. Why not mimic nature. They'll do well in Missouri. Here in Denver I also add the upright sedums that have the thick stems, such as 'Autumn Joy' and…"

"the problem with soapy water, is it really depends on the soap and is not insect specific, meaning, it could kill the good bugs. It definately is more labor intensive picking, I also pay my kids 10cents per bug - especially japenese beetles. This…"

wind resistent

the condition that outweighs all others where i live is how windy it is. Pants that thrive in the area often do not for me because of the wind. I planted as many windbreaks as possible but until they mature i am stuck with it. Anyone know of perenials that LIKE wind?

jamie replied to Kristine Lanning's discussion kitchen composting in the group Zone 7
"spring for a worm composter.. the price is worth it. I had one in my kitchen for years and loved it, it had NO oder at all, and was discretely in a corner. I have a larger greenhouse one now and don't need the fancier one, but i kept it because…"

jamie replied to Donna Wright's discussion Garden pooping out... does anyone plant a cover crop for fall and winter? in the group Zone 7
"in other zones i have done this. I see no reason it wouldn't work here, too. I planted rape seed. It is good for breaking up clay soil and the roots go very deep. It dies off and is easily tilled under, and adds nutrients to the soil. yet is…"

squash bugs

i have always dealt with bugs fairly successfully. I recently moved to southwestern Missouri where I believe the squash bugs intend to take over my garden, and possibly even the senate and house. What on earth do you do with them here?

"For Voles I've heard that Juicy Fruit gum kills them.  Also, you can get small metal wind pin wheels that you stick in the ground and it drives them away. http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf38571407.tip.html  I've pitch forked them…"
