My son-in-law makes the best mint iced tea and he uses chocolate mint. He puts in 4 tea bags, a large handful of the chocolate mint and sugar, adds boiling water and lets it steep for about 5 minutes, then removes the teat bags and mint and voila --…

If you are talking about my profile pic, those are peonies. There are some balloon flowers in there too, I believe.

That sounds glorious -- how do you do your green beans? I am on a roasted green bean kick - I put olive oil in the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish, throw in a bag of frozen green beans, add sea salt and put in 350 oven for 30 minutes -- better than…

Tomatoes marinated in balsamic vinegar is a whole other level of living..... I'm at work and my husband does the grocery shopping (grin, grin) so I will have to look at the brand we have. It is usually one thing we do splurge on.

feast or famine....

Posted on June 7, 2009 at 1:58pm 0 Comments

We had a bit too much rain after the last blog post time of "needing rain badly"..... Now we are drying out a little, with temps still in a nice zone -- not the hot and muggy that northern Ohio is famous for yet. I do feel bad for the farmers - they have had a hard time of it just trying to get into the fields to plant this spring (a lot are still unplanted), then the cool and moist have almost put any hopes of full crops under the manure pit.

Thank goodness it's raining.....

We missed the last couple of rains so were especially needing the rains and thunder and lightning today and tonight...... (the phosphorous does claim to clear the air I guess, even tho the lightning has been a bit extreme)

I love to sleep with the window open and listen to the rumbles and rain.

I don't know what it's like to have to garden in clay, but we have so many rocks in the "soil" that it is often much easier to do raised beds, at least for the vegetables.

The lilacs that I have are nothing special, I think they were a promo for joining the arbor day foundation many years ago. I notice that the roots are not very deep, so if yours are similar, perhaps you just need to amend the soil/clay to a little more depth and they would do better? Or find a different love interest for that spot. Can you grow broom? I've always wanted some but don't have a lot of sun. I hear they are just as prolific (read invasive) as the lilac are!

You know, my lilacs have sorta.. died. They started to bloom and then it got cold and they died. They haven't come back yet, so I'm guess they're down for the count this year.

And we really don't do anything with our peonies. I should probably do more, and maybe they'll look better. I love them though :)

The bushes you asked about are endless summer hydrangea. They are beautiful this year. I am going to take another picture of them tomorrow they are full of blooms. Glad you got some rain, we have had more that our share!

I actually was at the clinic two years ago but I'll never forget it. My brother was in the cardiac unit and we watched people come and go but he kept having one setback after another. It seemed like what could go wrong would go wrong. How great that your surgeon was in Alliance but I guess that is still a haul for you guys. I actually live 7 miles south of Alliance. I have a Minerva address but still have my Alliance phone. I am actually out in the middle of nowhere.

Our house is 24 years old. It was 8 years old when we moved in and we actually added on a big garage. But it does sort of have a country look like it has been here for a very long time. We have ton a ton of landscaping and planting pine trees. It has been a lot of fun but mowing is a beast but we love it. It was an issue when Kent was recuperating but I like mowing. We added a brick patio with a red picket fence about 14 years ago and it is a great area.

I am not sure what kind of manure I use but I buy organic from the greenhouse our friend owns. It isn't as stinky as the kind you would get in bulk. I try to be organic but there is a point where I can't go. I am thinking of starting some compost this summer but don't even know how to get started. My son who lives in Indianapolis has a compost pile so I guess I need to have him help me get started. I would like to purchase a container and am thinking of looking at Lehman Hardware in Kidron. Have you ever been there? It is a great place to visit and browse. They have a lot of very unique things that you can't find elsewhere. Speaking of fun places, we went to a restaurant in an old inn (?) that was right down the street from Malabar Farms last summer. Yummy!
