Back from Vaca

Posted on December 21, 2009 at 11:46am 2 Comments

Just got back from Orlando FL. What a difference! WE drove, when we left it was 3 degrees. When we arrived it was 81. I was drying! Then, it was a nice mid 70's. The gardens were fantastic (just around the hotel and residential and Disney). I have to admit however, I did miss the snow after a few days and was happy to come home to Michigan, to layers of snow, on the ground, on my spruce trees. Hey, perhaps I will take a pic. I grew the spruce and fir trees from 12" starters, put them in a… Continue

Seed Catalogs are arriving

Posted on December 11, 2009 at 3:20pm 0 Comments

New Park Seed catalog - what caught my interest was a new Ruddebekia (spelling) that is RED. Like a pink eccinacaie (spelling) it is so neat! A few other new varieties of neat seeds to try, but that one had me all a tremble! They are super easy to grow from seed as well, Ruddebekia that is, I have several varieties in my gardens that I have grown from seed............they deer find them all the time though

Winter is here!

Posted on December 9, 2009 at 4:58pm 0 Comments

Our county is under winter advisory - blizzard conditions. Everyone at work complained, my comment was "well, at least the snow is protecting my gardens". They all looked at me like I had lost my mind. *sigh*

love pics

Posted on December 6, 2009 at 7:45pm 0 Comments

I love the pics of the botanical gardens Freddie. Absolutely fabulous! I love succulents, and alas, here in zone 5 we are limited. I did put in some prickly pear this summer, picked it up at a garage sale for like 50 cents. We will see if it survies. :)

Drat! Let me explain. We bought our first house (handy-man's special) a few years ago. The back yard, dominated by ancient oaks and a massive white pine, was dark, damp and teeming with life, especialy earwings. Over time I've been able to decrease their numbers to a tolerable level. Then I noticed the petals on the flowers in my only sunny spot were disappearing. They appeared pest free until I examined them at night and found them covered with earwings. While planning my assult I found a notation in an article that they ate slugs. I have hostas...I love hostas. I also have slugs. Yet my hostas rarely have any damge. I thought if the earwing were protecting my hostas I'd let them stay.

Michelle, I bought the red Rudbeckia last year, there is a picture on my page. It's called Tomato Soup and is a beautiful red. This year it was a low growing coneflower. about 3 ft. tall. I saved seeds and hope to put a lot more out in my garden. They are very easy to start from seed as you know. Diane

Don't be afraid to prune back your prickly pear. Some metal tongs and a sharp knife work great. In cold weather the thicker varieties may droop and shred. By winter I cut mine back to 2-3 pads high. The smaller varieties will just lay down; prune them back some in the spring. I probably prune mine 3 times a year. Look for odd shaped pads and save these on the plant or to restart. Use a good thick rock dressing on top to reduce weeds, then use a handicapped grabber to pull weeds when they do come up. A leaf blower takes care of other debris. Using throw-away latex surgical gloves will keep the glochids (hair like spines) out of your hands.
