What kind of gardening do you like to do?
Raised bed, container, vegetable, herb.
How much time do you spend a week on average in your garden when weather permits?
Hours at a time ...the rest of my time thinking about it :-).
Hello! I am Kris. I live in central Georgia where I was born. I lived many other places before returning to my hometown and putting down roots (hey, a pun!) - including CA, NY, CO. Spent many years living in big cities. I am so happy to be settled and content here in our smallish town. We would love a farm one day. But, we love our 55 year old house, and our green, peaceful neighborhood. I have always wanted a garden! Finally, this year, my hubby helped me put together my first raised bed! It is full of tomatoes: Roma, Plum, Beefsteak. I started them from seed - and was like a little kid at Christmas when they sprouted! Feel like a proud tomato mamma! Conditions this far south are near tropical, really, so we are getting plenty of rain, constant humidity, and lots of sunshine. We are concerned about the amount of shade we get in the backyard (where my raised bed is) - so any advice and insight is, and will always be, welcome! I think I have good instincts...but I am a beginner. Feel free to mentor me...I will receive it humbly!!! :-) All the best to everyone...hope your gardens are flourishing...and you too! Love, Kris

Color of tomato plants leaves has changed...is this okay?

Posted on May 11, 2009 at 5:57pm 4 Comments

Hey guys,

My tomato plants' leaves were bright green as seedlings. Planted 'em about a week ago...and they seem chipper, but the leaves are a pale green now. Should I be concerned about the color change? Does the soil need something? Thanks for your help!!

Kris

Hey, Kris! Your seedlings look lovely! I had terrible luck with seeds this year. I ended up buying plants after all. I think it was due mostly to the fact that we were distracted with a major home repair (roofed about half the house, just the two of us) and so the poor little seedlings were rather neglected during a crucial time in their short lives. Your bed looks great! As for your question about the leaf color changing...heck, I dunno. But, you should join the Vegetable Gardens group and post a discussion about it. Believe me, your question will be answered by some of the best...Al Justice, among them. I have yet to see a question or concern that he could not address. Have fun tending your beautiful veggie bed...and give your 4-legged gardener a pat on the head for me! :)

Tampa has a lot of history. Members of my family worked in cigar factories. Well, this portrait is not recent. Happy Gardening.

I wish I could tell you her name. I think I have her paper somewhere. But yes it is me when I turned 30. It was a gift to myself. I want to say she was from Iceland/Greenland. She was in Tampa and working as a kiosk at the Westshore Mall that weekend. I saw her, liked her work and sat down for a portrait. I'm very happy I did it. Thank you for the compliment.

Hello, oakbyriver! Thought I would drop in and say "hi!," since we're practically neighbors and share about the same gardening interests and skill level. I'm in SC, about half way between Greenville and Columbia. We're in an area we jokingly refer to as the witness protection program b/c we don't really fall into the "Upstate" or the "Midlands," nor do we fall into the coverage area of any of the television networks' local affiliates, which is bad when it comes to getting reliable weather information. Anyway, welcome to Gardener's Index! I'm sure you will love it...it's a little addictive. I hope you will post some pictures of your gardens.
