Elena Williams replied to pbrain's discussion Putting roses to bed for the Winter in the group Roses
"Wait on the epsom salts. They are used to encourage basal breaks which should happen at the beginning of the growing season. I think your is too cold to do that now. Have you talked to an ARS consulting rosarian in your area? They are experienced…"

"I have constructed cages from chickenwire to place around the roses. I mound up dirt at the base of the canes, then fill the cage with straw or leaves. Not glamorous, but it has worked. I remove the cages in March."

"Do they get much moisture in the winter? That is the biggest downfall in Eastern Colorado. So whenever I can, I water them so they don't dry out. The straw will help too, or grass clippings. Put nightcrawlers in your beds before the freeze if…"

Where do you buy your stuff in Fishers? I was thinking of going up to the Tractor Supply Co. store and looking around there. There's also a gardening place on 116 near Brooks School Rd. that I probably need to look into...

That's why I'm so glad for Mel's technique of using above ground planting. I DREAD having to go and dig everything up! I have some bushes from the landscape package that are dying probably because of grubs (only one portion of the plant will go brown at a time). One already died before I could do anything about it, but it was stunted anyway...sigh...the grass overgrew the little border I put down years ago and I'm just tired of having to continuously go back and pull up all those new grass shoots....sigh....I wish I could just spend the money on a landscaper to come and redo the whole thing again! If I could I'd rip out everthing and just use the space for my planting boxes....

I wonder if we know the same people here in the Chase! =)=)

The only things I have growing are my perennials:
black knights
black jacks
salvias
along with the landscaping package that came with the house! =)=)

Naw, I finally invested in some landscape fabric for my big beds and it has really helped with the weeds! I can keep up with them now in half the time it took me before but it does have a down-side... nothing will come up beneath it so I have to leave an open area around my bulbs.

Hi again! It's the rose killer!!! LOL I haven't been on here in a while but haven't forgotten y'all. I've been so busy this summer I haven't had a lot of time in my garden. My roses are hanging in there! A few pretty blooms. That do love that cheap fertilizer from Wal MArt. How is your garden doing? I'm going to your site now to see if you've posted any new pics.

Like your pix, how is that boxwood doing? I'm thinking of ripping out my yews one of these days and planting with boxwood. I've heard some varieties do better than others.
