Yay Dirt! 2012

My first report for 2012:

Two raised beds prepped and ready, five to go. Plus a pretty large corner tree/flower bed we're installing. Yay dirt!

We're scaling way back this year and only trying to grow things we are interested in eating/using, which means lots of tomatoes, jalapenos, herbs, eggplant, carrots, and maybe some onion & garlic.

I hope this year will be the year of the.... CHICKEN. We're researching coop plans and breeds now. I'm…

Progress in Early May

Okra is in the ground. Squash is ready to go as soon as I get more manure. SOMEone removed all my veggie labels from the seed trays (I suspect beastie boys) so now I don't know my yellow squash from zucchini and bush beans from pole beans. This could get interesting.

Cowpeas are almost ready to go in the ground, I'm just toughening them up a bit before I do.

Tomatoes were getting some yellow leaves with brown spots at the bottom of their stalks. I pinched…

I woke up this morning at 3:20 to the sound of a storm raging outside the window. All I could think about were the tender little seedlings that had *just* peeked out of their peat pots over the weekend - I had left them on the potting table outside. The whole house shook with the wind and I thought for sure the baby plants had bit the dust... literally. Either the wind had blown them off the table or they were sitting in two inches of water and would never dry out. I contemplated throwing on…

Greetings, Stephenie, from a gardener in central Oklahoma.  Take advantage of your local County Extension Office.  They should have a treasure trove of published fact sheets about any type of gardening you wish to do.  These are usually free and are written for your specific growing area.  No library is complete without a collection of these in a binder for easy reference.

Why Not Host a Canning Camp?

Funny story...  Recently, I posted on Facebook how I would like to learn to can this summer and got so many comments back from friends that I had an idea. Why not host a Canning Camp? We were lucky enough to have a resident expert offer her farm & expertise to lead the class and provide the venue, and 7 would-be canners eager to learn huddled in her kitchen last Saturday. 7 was perfect class size since we could all chop & prep our produce, process it, and load it into the pressure…See More
