If you look at the leaves of each type of plant they are very different. The asiatics are narrow and pointed and appear more whorled around the stem. The orientals are more rounded . Asiatic bulbs multiply - very generously. Usually if you plant one oriental lily -- that is all you are going to get -- one plant -- it doesn't shed more bulbs unless you purposely peel of scales and try to start your own bulbs and it take a long time to get those bulbs to mature, at least in my experience. If you look in my album -- two good photo shot examples with leaf differences would be Mona Lisa - oriental, and the Red Asiatic ( it think that is a Red Partner Lily).

Also another difference is in fragrance. The asiatic has no scent and the oriental has a beautiful smell and each is unique.

I toured your gardens this evening. Beautiful! You have a wonderful sense of layout and design. I especially enjoyed looking at your iris -- I envy your ability to grow them. I try -- but since I have mostly shade, I only get a few blooms.
