storm of the century for Amsterdam

Our town got hit by Irene and it knocked us for a loop. The whole city is shocked, water logged and saddened at the loss of a Historic home built by Guy Johnson. Guy Park State Historic Site, is a house built in 1773 for Guy Johnson In 1774,  The original house was struck by lightning and burnt to the ground.  Johnson left the house never to return in 1775 because of the American Revalutionary War. After many years as a tavern,  the house has become a historical  museum, with exhibits…

Ode to Texas (author unknown)

Ode to Texas

The devil wanted a place on earth

Sort of a summer home

A place to spend his vacation

Whenever he wanted to roam.

So he picked out Texas

A place both wretched and rough

Where the climate was to his liking

And the cowboys hardened and tough.

He dried up the streams in the canyons

And ordered no rain to fall

He dried up the lakes in the valleys

Then baked and scorched it all.

Then over his barren country

He… Continue

Stormy Weather

I awoke to an unknown sensation. Was it me? My heart beating 'funny' again? No. It  is the bed, it is shaking ever so slightly. It must be my dog, panting hard or scratching herself with gusto, lying near my feet. I sat up slightly to see if she was alright. No dog. More shaking. The empty shoe tree carousel was turning and rocking. The house is built on concrete slab. By now I was sitting upright trying to understand what was happening. Now my heart IS pounding. I sat on the edge of my bed…

overwinter mandevilla

I have a beautiful Mandevilla I purchased at the beginning of the summer.  It's potted in a hanging basket.  I would love to try overwintering it since it's so beautiful.  Has anyone had success?  If so, can you let me know how to go about overwintering?  I've been very successful overwintering two hibiscus trees.  Are they similar?  Thank you

Blooming Texas Sage - A Sign of Rain?

Texas Sage and Bee

As I drove to work Tuesday morning this week, I noticed the Texas Sage shrubs in my neighborhood were ablaze with purple blooms.  At first, I thought only a few were blooming along the right-of-way, but as I meandered deeper into my neighborhood toward the highway, I found just about every sage bush I came upon was abloom.  When I arrived…

Healing Gardens

After looking  breifly over some of the new posts I realized how gardens are healing many people on this site, Just by working in them, sitting and looking, smelling, The morning walk thru, the changing seasons. The garden helps people work thru things, it listens to you, it pushes you to make its life better and returns the favor by putting life in your hands. Even the people that cant get out of the house enjoy…

A Summer Poem, By Annie Stevens

Painted flower pots

front porch swings

hot afternoons

the Robin sings

Summer rain

barefoot walks

children's giggles

backyard talks

Family visits

iced tea and scones

fresh mowed yards

long walks home

Scents of flowers

summer romance

lights hung in trees

a couple's dance

Hard work all Spring

dirty nails, calloused knees

worth every moment

to dance…

August Reflections

August is here and as I look around my garden I find the beds are out of control. A little too much heat, a little too much vacation time, a little summertime laziness and suddenly the beds are a mess. Reminds me a lot of life. So often a little unintentional neglect in relationships or circumstances can result in areas of our lives spinning out of control.

So how do we restore order in our lives? I think it's just like we do in our garden beds, by getting down on our knees, pulling out… Continue

a year in my garden: august

August.

Meh.

Definitely not a stellar time in my garden. First of all, it’s so $#@&! hot, and I have little interest in being outside for more than 10 minutes unless I’m poolside. So the garden gets a little – well okay, a LOT – neglected.

August is also one of those “in between” months in the garden – most of my summer bloomers are done for the season (or on their way out), and the fall perennials have yet to hit their stride. And what does remain looks…
