My name is Lana and I live in the Inland Empire (eastern Washington state). I never planned to be a gardener. It sort of happened upon me, because I watch birds. I started watching birds in 2006. Birds like trees and shrubs, so I've gone from 10 to more than 110 in the last few years. And it never seems to end. :) Now, I want to create bird specific gardens. I have almost an acre, so there's lots of room to play with that. Next spring, I plan on planting a bird seed garden complete with millet, sunflowers, zinnia, cosmos, and anything else that makes sense. I plant a lot of things with berries and also I enjoy vines and climbers.

Most of my container plants consist of petunias, alyssum, nasturtium, and herbs.

I didn't actually have a vegetable garden, this year, but it's the first year in a few that I haven't. We had a lot of car repair issues that were getting me down. I tried the Topsy Turvy this year, and I'm not fond of it. I planted other tomato plants where I usually plant flowers and it got over run by birdseed, because I had a feeder too close. Meh... live and learn.

Sue: We got a late start on our tomatoes and it seems like we're also having a slow growing season, as well. I do take photos of the birds who visit my yard and some of them are on my page on the slide show. :)

Queen: Do you ever have a problem with Mullberry juice where you don't want it? I've been told the birds love 'em, but also cautioned they are very messy with the birds.

If you love birds, plant a Mullberry tree!! It attracts over 80 species of birds....I have 18 fruiting mullberrys on this hill and I corner the market wtih birds late spring...and they are yummy to boot!

Live and learn is my motto every gardening year. I see my garden as one big experiment as what grew great last year may not have the same weather conditions this year. My tomatoes have been slow to grow and ripen since our summer has been cool and rainy; not the usual hot and humid Iowa summer. Do you take photos of the birds that visit your garden? I would love to see them! :)
