I made head way with setting up a garden on my apartment patio today. I scored some great deals on pots at Lowes, as well as buying several herbs and flowers. I bought my first rose plant today, as well as my first fushia (sp?). I love white roses with red tipped petals and just could not resist buying it, especially as cheap as it was for a quite healthy and pretty good sized plant. The fushia (I know I'm spelling that wrong agh!) my husband picked out specifically to go with this great cone shaped hanging planter I bought on a whim because I liked it. It'll be my great experiment to see if I can keep those two flowering plants alive ... and so the adventure begins. Picked up an Indian Blanket also, I really love the orange-peach tones in Indian Blanket. I grew one from seed many moons ago, but took the easier route this time :)

I also picked up quite a few herbs. I'm super excited to be planting herbs again. I've really missed having a garden to putter around sticking herbs in weird places. So I'm a little limited on space, but I'm getting creative in figuring out how and where to put everything I want. I have an Italian Oregano in an old ceramic mushroom statue that had broken, so I just flipped it upside down and stuck the oregano in it. I'm trying out the planters that hook over the edge of the railing for the first time too. I'm thinking maybe I need to put shredded paper in the bottom to help prevent soil and water loss.
A couple of the containers are going to have "theme" grouping of herbs ... that sort of happened unintentionally, but now it seems like a good idea. One container has Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme (couldn't resist this obvious one!); and another container has my "lemon" plants - Lemon Balm and Lemon Thyme right now, plus I have my eyeball on Lemon Basil that I plan on adding also. I love how Lemon Balm smells like Pledge cleaning stuff. I've only got one Peppermint plant right now, but I'd like to add Spearmint also and let them fight each other for dominance.
The Nasturtiums I planted last weekend are popping up. Can't wait for them to get big and bloom! I threw some Cilantro seeds in an extra planter too ... mmm, fresh Cilantro to cook with yum.
I picked up a snappy bamboo wind chime at Big Lots too to add some flair and pretty thonk thonk noise to the garden.
Next week ... plans for a cactus planter and stating pumpkin seedlings. I'm considering container vegtable gardening as well. I've only ever tried peppers and beans, so this will be a whole other Big Adventure to experiment with.
