The other day I was out finding plants to put in my 1/2 hanging wall baskets. It's not a whole basket if you know what I mean. I got to thinking how the coconut basket only lasts so long and how the water just runs out of it quickly. Being in TX, they tend to dry out quickly and need watering almost everyday. Well, I found a solution. Since I have 4 sons and they are now grown; I had some deflated dodge balls lying around the yard. I stumbled upon (literally). It got me thinking. Why not cut them in 1/2? Well low and behold they fit perfectly inside. As I go around watering, I've come to realize I don't have to water these as much anymore. Of course, you do need some drain holes. Thought I'd share this tip with all of you.

Have you ever tried Hightly absorbent diapers to line the bottom? I hear they have the water absorbing crystals.I have the crystals instead and poke holes to the root zone w/ a pencil, pour a little bit of the HydroGel in (not too much ) cover w/ soil and voila! No more problems and no worries about mildew forming in the plastic;)

Well that sounds better than the plastic bags I used on mine. After 2 years of drying to quickly I took the whole coconut shell with the dirt and put it  inside a plastic bag and then set that in a new coconut shell. I dont have to water as often, however they still dry out toooo fast! I really should have put my dryer lint in the bottom to absorb more water!
