Well the leaves are falling so I have a question for all avid gardeners, do you clean up the beds in the fall or wait until spring? Perhaps like me you are selective in what you prune now and what you leave for winter interest. Do you remove dead vegetables and plant a cover crop or do you just leave it over winter and till it in in the spring? I have seen it done both ways so I don't think your garden cares much. I cut down most perennials in the fall, prune some shrubs, clean up all my lillies, let all my roses form rose hips and put down lots of mulch (wood mulch or leaves that have been mulched) cover plants that aren't very cold hardy with two layers of burlap. I also visit all my favorite garden stores and several wholesalers that open to the public in the fall. Fall is my favorite planting time and at 50% off some wonderful bargains are out there. So what do you do? Clean up now or later?
