My friends I have been reading much grumbling about fall and the seemingly endless wait for spring that most of us gardeners find difficult to endure. many or most of our lovely garden disappears annuals die and perennials go dormant, the rains and dark days are here and the winter has yet to show us how mean he might be to those plants that are strong and brave enough to last until he arrives with his infamous weapons of mass destruction. It is a wee bit of grief we feel as we suffer the temporary and sometimes permanent loss of our creations with Nature.
I always look to poetry during the fall and winter to find words which may relate to how I feel, trapped inside, while my babies are freezing outside.
Today I decided to write a poem for my new friends. Because you have said so many things here on GS which I can relate to.
It is written to mimic the classic English style of poetry I love so well. I am not a poet but I had such fun writing this for you.
My new friend Catherine Cronin is my inspiration for much of the poem, but then Ye might have noticed that all by ye self lass! <Smiling here> (I want to be Irish so bad!) Hope you enjoy my poem.
DISCLAIMER: (The grammatical errors in the following poem are ignored due to the rules of poetic license lol)
Fall Has Brought the Dying Days
Fall has brought the dying days
Gone is summer’s heat and haze
No longer do heads of flowers raise
Leaves of the Maples set ablaze
Fall has brought the dying days
Each new gardener will so discover
Ye are but nature’s foster mother
In fall each child dies atop the other
Where now ye garden soil must cover
Winter weeps and your babies smother
Yet for all the grief this season brings
Gardeners still ought remember things
Your children in shades of red to greens
Will awaken yet from their morbid dreams
When winter leaves and summer springs
