I planted my FIRST garden may 4th. So far i have 2 green bean sprouts and one sugar snap pea sprout. My radishes are growing like crazy and my lettuce is too. I also just noticed that my spinach is coming up too...STILL NO POTATOES!!!! but its only been a week...i guess i gotta give em time! im so IMPATIENT!!! There are several tomatoes planted through out the yard because i ran out of room in my garden! lol...i also made my own upside down tomato growing things with 5 gallon buckets...one has a tomato plant and the other has a cucumber plant....OH i have green peppers, cabbage and broc. but all of those where purchased as plants everything else is from seed! i feel like nothing is going to grow but i will give everything some time! my garden isnt in the best of spots...it doesnt get full sun all day. SO im sure thats delaying it as well!

Isn't it so exciting to see those baby plants poking their head out of the dirt?! I go out every morning and walk around the house to see what's blooming and then to the veggie bed to see if anything new is there. Really enjoying!!

Dawn, could you amend your name to include your zone and state? I was a bit bewildered at first as the veggies you talk about are well into their season here.

Congrats! First gardens are so important. Just remember, something's going to fail. Give yourself a break and enjoy what succeeds. Potatoes are finicky sometimes, too much water, not enough water, water too uneven, too cool, too hot--arrgh! Sweet potatoes are a bit more forgiving and like summer heat so if your regular potatoes don't make it go ahead and plant them.

As for the sun, don't worry about it. As long as they get six hours a day, preferably morning, they'll be fine. Afternoon sun is fine too as long as you shade the delicate ones a bit. I plant the delicate ones under the hardier ones for the shade. Heat and sun are more of a problem here in Texas than they would be in Ohio I'd say.
