Pottimg Area or Potting Shed – Luxury or Necessity?

Every gardener, whether a newbie or old timer, needs a place for gardening activities and a place to keep their gardening supplies and tools. Whether it’s a little corner in your garage or in a garden shed in the yard, it’s nice to have a designated spot for doing things gardeners do, such as re-potting root bound plants, mixing up some potting mix or other potions or pruning and tending potted plants. It’s also very nice to have all of your gardening supplies and tools in one place, so when you’re working in the garden you know exactly where to go to get what you need.

Potting sheds can be a stand alone, small building or a lean-to off the house or garage. Any potting area, whether in the garage or potting shed, needs to have some or all of the following.

  • A bench or table
  • Shelves
  • Hooks or large nails  on the wall
  • A garden caddy, large plastic garbage can or very large wall hooks
  • Windows
  • A good sturdy lock on the door

Location is important because of convenience and comfort. Near the garden is best. At the end of a hard day in the garden, you’re not going to want to put away all those tools if you have to go too far. Also, having your potting area in a shady location makes it so much more useable and pleasant to work in.

Potting Shed

This potting shed is going to be hot for a couple of summers until the Crape Myrtle, planted on the south and west, grow tall enough to shade it.

No, not a cross...I have another poly tunnel (14ft. x 20ft.) for only growing veggies in as well.

Aaw, that's a shame you couldn't bring it with you, it's beautiful !

Hi Catherine,

It sounds like you have a cross between a greenhouse and a potting shed. A greenhouse is on my wish list.

By the way, I do have a potting shed, but that isn't it...any longer. When I sold my house and moved west, I gave up my Sheebeen.  I failed to get any pictures of my current potting shed  before the snows came.

Love your potting shed Judi,

My potting shed is called "The Sheebeen"....Irish for "Little House". But it is actually a 10ft x 20ft polytunnel, which also has a table and 2 chairs. I have a folding long table, and a few old plastic greenhouse shelves, and enough room to hold all the overwintering plants too.

But my hand gardening tools are kept in a bucket so I can carry them around with me instead of losing them all over the garden and have to retrace my steps for ages...LOL!

Some great ideas Priscilla.

Hi Judi! I agree that a potting area is both a necessity and luxury for all the reasons you give plus it makes the work so much easier when your supplies are all in one place. Not to mention it's easier to keep up with everything! Having to keep buying hand trowels because you can't find the one you just bought is frazzling! Your shed is beautiful as it is, can't wait to see it covered with greenery! I've no room for a shed, but I work from a potting table made from a workshop table with top shelves I added from scrap lumber (pic to come). It's much bigger and taller as many purchased potting tables I shopped for are smaller. More ideas - I'd like to cut a hole in the top to store soil, and add a drawer for smaller items like seed envelopes. Can't wait til Spring! Happy Gardening!
