I can remember exactly where I was on "9/11".I am now a retired police officer, but at the time I was still working and had watched part of the destruction in New York on television before heading to work and then saw the destruction of both towers after arriving. The feeling of helplessness, as a 23 yr veteran cop, to not be able to do anything about what I was seeing, was overwhelming. Thoughts of that day still haunt me.
Today, I was not sure if there was something I could do, or some way that may be only intrinsic to me that perhaps would allow some solace or a place to honor all those that lost their lives and so many that under different circumstances could well have been my own co-workers.
My dawn journey to the Navarre Sound on the Gulf of Mexico truly allowed me to not only reflect on past events, but presented an opportunity to photograph a glorious morning.
When I started to sort and edit the photos I had taken, the more I realized how much they reminded me of that fateful morning. While the morning clouds billowed with the same crimson, blue and black colors of the fatal burning and clouds of rolling darkness, the sun then crept over the horizon offering hope of a new dawn.
Then the wonders of life on the sound played out before us. Jumping and frolicking birds and fish seemed to have no worries and allowed my passage without fear.
I can only hope that we can all find a way to live with such joy and to not have to fear for tomorrow.
Please take a look at the wonderful display I was able to capture this Saturday, September 11, 2010.
May we all find this kind of beauty and joy!
