Well, spring clean up in Brookings, South Dakota is coming to an end. The residents have, as is annually done, put their "throw away" items on the curb & the rest of the community has first dibs on the things before the city unleashes the garbage trucks, dump trucks & front end loaders to hall away that which is left.
Its a great way for frugal types to acquire everything from furniture & household items, to fencing & lumber!
This year was my first BIG event participation. Joining an "experienced" junker who has done it for years, I traversed the town looking for treasures for my projects & hers. We had a blast! We not only collected up things for ourselves, but also for her father & a few others. Additionally we delivered a few items to Habitat Restore, once we learned they had been looking for volunteers to "work for them" on the streets.
I got metal file cabinets, lumber, fencing, bird feeders, a beautiful martin house on its original tall pole, some vintage chairs, a wicker trunk, some window blinds, some wooden shutters, garden hoses, flower pots, window boxes and wooden planter boxes.
With time, I will post photos of all the "finds" in their new reclaimed form. Perhaps one of the best finds was that of us finding a recently removed redwood deck that's lumber was still in great shape; which will be recycled into a smaller deck for my scrounging partner.
