Hi Sheri! Thank you so much for posting that. Good to hear from you. I admire Jackie. I think she's such a neat lady. If I’m ever in the area I’ll make it a point to stop and see Jackie’s lab, if that is all possible.
I have been studying how to tissue culture bamboo every since I saw Jackie’s video. I already have some in tissue culture. You're right it's a hard thing to do. I had many failures but finally got the hang of it. In a few weeks I should be able to start to multiply them in test tubes. I’m starting out with Moso because I just became fascinated by that type of bamboo, being one of the largest and relatively cold hardy. I have some growing in pots too. They are quite small at the moment. I’ll keep an eye on their water needs. I do want to try propagating some other types of bamboo. Thank you for your suggestions about Negra "Hale". Yes, it’s a beautiful and an expensive bamboo. I’ll wait until I get all of the kinks worked out with Moso:-)
Thanks again Sheri. You are always such a great source of information:-)

Hi Pam, there are quite a few types of bamboo. The one I'm growing is Moso. It can grow in zone 7a or where the temps can get down to 0 degrees F. I have to bring mine in during the winter. It likes sun, well drained soil but does like water. Some types of bamboo, the ones that send out runners, can be a problem to control. If you plant bamboo outside look for the clumping type and not the kind that send out runners.
The Moso can take 3 or 4 years to get really tall and that's in warm climate. The Moso is one of the tallest types of bamboo. They can reach 40 to 70 feet tall. After the 3rd year of growth is when they start to put on some height.

Hi Mark, Fargesia murielae or the Umbrella Bamboo can grow n zone 5 where temps get down to -20 F. It grows to about 14 feet tall. The Umbrella bamboo doesn't send out runners so it's not too much of a problem to keep it under control.

What type of climate and soil does it take to grow bamboo? Also how long does it take to grow a plant to full grown? And is bamboo a noxious plant?

Do you have varieties that will grow in northern illinois as a perennial?
