Hi Anne, The compost here is almost all shredded leaves - curbside collections in the fall - but I recently discovered they also add at least some manure (Horse, Goat, Rabbit, Chicken, Cow etc.), which thrills me to no end.  While you wouldn't have any trouble collecting Compost from Upper Merion (I think it's technically for residents, but no one checks) it would be hard to justify the trip.  Particularly when there is probably a source closer to you.  Try this Bucks County Compost Directory to see if a neighboring township provides.  Be sure to call even if Compost is not listed to make sure.  Good Luck!

Tim Brophy, Do you have to be a resident of UM to get the free compost? Is it clean? I live in lower Bucks county

Hey man,  you are going to have so much food from all those boxes!  Looks good.  I'm trying this for the first time, too.  I had to customize SFG, as well.  Mine is 2ft x 17ft.  I live in the middle of the city with only one area that gets enough sun to garden.  I live in Indianapolis so I'm still waiting for the last frost to pass. Happy Gardening!

GOOD JOB....you must be a plumber.  I started an above the ground square foot garden too.  So much easier than digging up the ground.

I'm doing this for the first time as well in Rollinsford, NH in the public gardens.  I have started the vegetables on my kitchen counter.  I can't wait to plant!

i dont know about the sq foot but raised beds are great and easy to weed. he shouldnd have used treated wood if you want a organic garden the best wood it hemlock it will never rot and dont need to be treated.best managable bed size is 4'x8' and 8' deep.  the mix is great but i would add 1/2 part earthworm castings witch you should be able to get at ur local nusery. perlite is great stuff too it areats the soil. for watering poke holes in an old garden hose and run it along the middle of each garden. for tomatos put plants 2 wide and 2-3 feet apart
